Soup tureen with floral knob
Faenza, Ferniani workshop?, 18th century

tureen

A large lidded bowl, typically having handles, though these are often solely ornamental in purpose, the tureen is designed for the table service of soup.

Faience and maiolica soup tureens are usually highly ornamental objects, designed to hold a place of honor on the center of the table. Ceramic tureens comprise a vast array of shapes and painted ornament, from relatively simple basin- or bowl-shaped whitewares to whimsical trompe l’oeil vessels in the shape of animals, fish, birds, and vegetables like pumpkins or heads of cabbage.
