The etymology of the Italian term albarello, a cylindrical vessel used to store dry, solid, powdered or unctuous drugs, cosmetics, dyes, pigments, sweetmeats, spices and herbs, is uncertain, but is believed to be Arabic in origin.

Apothecary wares are assumed to have originated in Mesopotamia where the first hospitals and schools of medicine were established. Drug jars were among the earliest, and most enduring maiolica forms introduced to Europe from the Islamic world.
